LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The T-No. 16 Colorado Mesa men's wrestling team opened competition at the NWCA National Duals at the Kentucky Convention Center on Friday (Jan. 6) morning with a pair of narrow losses to ranked teams in the dual format tournament.
#4 West Liberty 20, T-#16 Colorado Mesa 19
Colorado Mesa started the dual off with two huge wins over ranked opponents, but the dual came down to bonus points as #4 West Liberty came away with three bonus point wins against the Mavericks two in a 20-19 win for the Hilltoppers.
At 125 pounds,
Dawson Collins earned a takedown in overtime to secure a 3-1 sudden victory over No. 1 ranked and two-time national champion Cole Laya. He was followed up at 133 pounds by his teammate
Collin Metzgar, ranked No. 9 in the most recent rankings, who earned a 5-4 win over No. 6 Vincent Scollo to give Colorado Mesa an early 6-0 lead.
After dropping the next three bouts, the Mavericks answered with a run of their own as
Alex Holguin,
Jason Bynarowicz, and
Kash Anderson all earned victories. Bynarowicz and Anderson earned bonus point wins as they secured a major decision and pin respectively.
It all came down to the heavyweights where West Liberty's No. 6 Francesco Borsellino earned an 8-0 major decision for the bout win and team win.

For the second straight match, the two teams split the 10 matches with No. 14 Fort Hays State winning five and the Mavericks winning five but once again bonus points were the difference as the Tigers had three bonus wins to the Mavericks two in a 20-19 loss for Colorado Mesa.
Dawson Collins and
Collin Metzgar kept their hot streak going as they opened the dual with a pair of wins to send each of them to 2-0 on the day. Collins earned a pin in 4:43 while Metzgar had a major decision over Corbin White at 133 pounds.
Andrew Silva (141) and
Ryan Wheeler (157) each earned their first wins of the day as Silva came away with a 7-5 sudden victory while Wheeler earned a 5-2 decision over Clint Herrick.
Jason Bynarowicz moved to 2-0 on the day as he earned a 7-6 decision win over Bryce Westmoreland at 184 pounds.
