Big Runs Help Mavs Pull Away From Chadron

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa used a 12-2 run late in the second half to pull away from a tenacious Chadron State team, topping the Eagles 73-60 for CMU's sixth consecutive RMAC win.

Mac Riniker was all over both ends of the court, ending with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists with two steals and a block. Trevor Baskin and Isaac Jessup each had a team-high 14 points while Blaise Threatt, Michael McCurry and Christopher Speller all had 10 to make it five Mavericks in double figures.

The win improved CMU to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the RMAC. Chadron State fell to 8-6 and 5-3 in the RMAC with the loss.

Despite playing its fourth game in the past seven days, Chadron State came out playing hard and kept up consistent effort through the entire 40 minutes. The Eagles jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, and although CMU scored five quick points to take the lead, Chadron went on a 5-0 run of its own to go back up by four, 11-7 at six minutes into the game.

Riniker was in his element early, scoring all nine of his points plus a steal and a block during a physical first half that saw only two fouls called on each team in the opening 20 minutes. Riniker helped the Mavs take the lead with a layup, an assist on a Michael McCurry three-pointer and a jumper to put CMU up 14-13.

The score stayed close until a 15-3 run starting with 7:25 left in the first half gave CMU a 13-point lead. Isaac Jessup hit a pair of three-pointers during that run and tied a career high with four treys for the game.

Chadron battled back in the second half and had a chance to tie the game when Patrick McLachlan was fouled on a made three-pointer that made it 46-45 Mavs. But McLachlan missed the free throw on the potential four-point play, and CMU scored the next four points to prevent Chadron from taking the lead.

The Mavs' final big run of the day started with a Christopher Speller three-pointer that made it 56-51 with 7:25 to go. Riniker came up with a steal and called a timeout, then on the ensuing possession assisted on a McCurry layup. Speller hit another three during the 12-2 run that ensured the Mavs held a double-digit lead for the final 3:22 of the game. Speller scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

The Mavericks were potent from behind the arc, finishing 12 of 20 as a team for a season-best .600 three-point percentage. They shot 47 percent from the field for the game, while Chadron only managed to shoot 39 percent from the field, 29 percent from deep and 44 percent from the line, making only 2 of 7 foul shots in the second half.

The Mavs have now won 11 straight games over the Eagles since and including Feb. 7, 2015.  They are now 26-1 at home against them and are 39-11 in the series.

Colorado Mesa will hit the court again tomorrow against Colorado Christian, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars are 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC. They lost to Westminster 80-45 on Friday night.
