CHADRON, Neb. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team took a small group to face Chadron State on Sunday (Jan. 29) in the rescheduled dual from a week ago. The Mavericks survived a scare as they ended up winning six of the nine duals but also forfeited a weight in a 24-23 win over the Eagles in the Chicoine Center.
Freshman
Isabella Morales opened the dual with an 11-1 technical fall win over Kinsey Smith at 101 pounds. The Eagles countered by winning the next two bouts with one coming by fall and the other by way of forfeit at 116 pounds.
Colorado Mesa came back and won four straight bouts with two coming by fall, a technical fall win and a win on criteria.
Marissa Gallegos claimed a technical fall win at 123 pounds followed by pins from
Hailey Chapman at 130 pounds and
Holly Beaudoin at 36 pounds.
Celina Cooke rounded out the run with an 8-8 criteria victory at 143 pounds.
After a Chadron State win at 155 pounds,
Samantha Vasquez may have pulled off the win that saved the dual match win for the Mavericks at 170 pounds. Vasquez defeated Eagle Kamila Montenegro 6-4 to seal the dual.
It was a huge win as Chadron State's Lila Bloomer pulled off the upset as she pinned
Jayleen Sekona at 191 pounds in the final bout.
Colorado Mesa will be back on the road for next weekend when they compete in the McKendree Bearcat Open.
