GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Western Colorado's Brooklyn Seymour rebounded her own missed shot and scored the putback with less than a second on the clock to give the Mountaineers a 61-60 win over Colorado Mesa on Saturday (Jan. 28) night in Brownson Arena.
After playing the first quarter to an even 14-14 score, Western Colorado outscored the Mavericks 19-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-20 lead into the break. The Maverick starters only had five points at the time and the Mountaineers closed out the half on a 17-3 run in the final five minutes and change.
Colorado Mesa responded with one of their best quarters of the season where the outscored Western Colorado 24-12 in the frame. They fell behind by 16 in the quarter but came roaring back to trim the Mountaineer lead to just one at 46-45 after a 14-0 run to end the third quarter.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the night with 7:20 to go in the fourth as
Laura Gutierrez buried a second chance three to make it 49-48.
The two teams traded buckets in the fourth quarter that led to eight lead changes and two ties. But, in the end it was Seymour's put back that was the difference in the game.
Redshirt freshman
Josee Steadman finished with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Steadman's 15 points led to the Mavericks having a 37-4 advantage in bench points.
Monica Brooks finished with a 10 and 10 double-double while mid-year transfer
Megan Pohs finished with 11 points, her highest total in a Maverick uniform.
The win for the Mountaineers snaps a 12-game home winning streak for the Mavericks in the rivalry. The win streak dates to the 2010 season and snapped Colorado Mesa's three-game home winning streak this season.
The Mavericks will continue the home stand next week as they play host to Regis and UCCS. The game next Saturday against UCCS will be the annual Blizzard in Brownson game brought to you by Coca Cola.
