GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Freshman sensation
Manuel Ponce Casas kept up his goal per game pace while adding two assists, leading Colorado Mesa to a 5-1 win over Montana State Billings in the Colorado Mesa Kickoff Weekend presented by Doubletree by Hilton.
Alvaro Parra had a three-point night with an assist and a penalty kick goal, and
Raymond Jackson,
Joey Joiner and
Fernando Morales also found the net for the Mavs.
The Mavs improve to 3-1 on the season, with three wins in a row. They outshot the Yellowjackets 16-6. Goalkeepers
Connor Durant and
Diego Chavez, who played the final 17 minutes, each made two saves in goal for CMU.
The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board, as Ponce Casas quickly took a free kick to start a forward move for CMU. The ball made its way back to Ponce Casas, who played right back
Raymond Jackson on the overlap run down the wing.
The redshirt junior defender looked just like a forward as he faked a stepover to get around a defender and score to give CMU the lead in just the fourth minute. It was Jackson's first career goal in 47 games in a Mavs uniform.
Ponce Casas remained in the center of the action, receiving a through ball from
Matheus Lazzuri and firing a shot that was saved by a diving MSUB keeper. But when the Yellowjackets attempted to clear the loose ball, it deflected off redshirt sophomore forward
Joey Joiner to make it 2-0 going into halftime.
After setting up chances for teammates twice, Ponce Casas scored a goal of his own in the 49
th minute, taking a pass from
Alvaro Parra to keep his streak alive of scoring in every game of his college career.
The Mavs continued to pressure, and a handball in the box gave CMU a penalty kick. Parra was the one who stepped up to the spot, and scored into the top left corner to make it 4-0 after 63 minutes.
Montana State Billings pulled one back on a devastating counter attack, with a perfectly timed pass from Jeremie Briquet that hit the foot of the onrushing Ryan Hanley to make it 4-1. But the Yellowjackets' momentum didn't last long, as
Fernando Morales finished off of a chipped pass from
Kevin Nunez to increase CMU's lead back to four.
In the closing stages of the game, MSUB defender Edgar Ramirez received a straight red card for a hard foul in the corner. Mavericks freshman defender
Stevie Koon received a yellow card in the exchange.
Next up, the Mavericks will battle Simon Fraser, who beat Fort Lewis 1-0 in the earlier game Thursday. Fort Lewis and Montana State Billings will play at 4 p.m. on Saturday prior to CMU's match.
