GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Two quick first-half strikes were enough for Fort Lewis to snap a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team.
Devastated by injuries on the defensive end, the Mavs surrendered a pair of goals in quick succession to Gabriel Legendre in the 14th minute and Tomas Duenes Gonzalez in the 21st minute after Connor Durant made a pair of saves in the match's opening 12 minutes. Although the Skyhawks only managed two more shots on goal for the remainder of the contest, the damage was done as the Mavs could only manage David Peters' goal in the 69th minute.
The Mavs outshot Fort Lewis 21-17 overall and 7-6 in shots on goal, but Skyhawks goalkeeper Evan Kowalski made six saves while taking home the win.
Colorado Mesa held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks taken for the match and converted on one of them when Leo Mireles sent an in-swinging cross into the box that Peters headed into the top left corner. It was Peters' first goal of the season and Mireles' second assist of the year.
Forward Alec Fronapfel was the Mavs' most consistent offensive threat, tallying five shots including one on frame. Daisuke Takanaka put two of his three shot attempts on goal for the Mavericks. At the other end of the pitch, Connor Durant made four saves in net for CMU, moving past the 100-save mark for his career.
The Mavericks are 5-4-1 overall with an 0-2-1 record in the RMAC. They will play Adams State on Sunday at noon, their first time facing the Grizzlies since their record-breaking 9-0 win a season ago.
