Second-Half Explosion Carries Mavs Past Adams State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Locked in a scoreless draw at halftime, the Colorado Mesa men's soccer team turned a corner in the final 45 minutes, eventually routing Adams State 5-0 to snap a four-game winless streak.

Five different Maverick players found the net while goalkeeper Diego Chavez kept a clean sheet in his first start of the season. With the win, the Mavs improved to 6-4-1 overall with a 2-2-1 RMAC record. Adams State remained winless at 0-11-1.

The first half was a stalemate, as CMU held Adams State without a shot on goal but only managed one of their own, although forward Alec Fronapfel did hit the post just three minutes into the match. Tallyn Bronson's 38th minute attempt was stopped by ASU keeper Logan Rabasca, the first save of the afternoon for either goalkeeper.

After halftime, however, it was all Mavericks. Colorado Mesa scored five goals on just six shot attempts, all of which were on target.

Moses Magens got CMU on the board just 90 seconds into the second half. Magens, a redshirt sophomore midfielder making his first start for the Mavs, recorded his first goal for CMU in his fifth appearance in a Maverick uniform since transferring from Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Redshirt sophomore forward Joey Joiner made it 2-0 in the 60th minute. The Mavericks continued to pile on in the match's final 15 minutes, getting a goal from Alvaro Parra in the 75th minute just a minute and 20 seconds after the midfielder was substituted into the game.

Diego Chavez made three saves in the second half, stopping Grizzly shots in the 69th, 78th and 87th minutes. Immediately after Chavez's third save, the Mavericks scored twice in quick succession to complete the rout, with Fernando Morales converting in the 88th minute and Moises Martinez scoring CMU's fifth just a minute and 24 seconds later. Martinez's goal was his first for Colorado Mesa after transferring from Salt Lake CC prior to this season.

The Mavericks will hope to carry momentum from this win into next week, when they face Westminster in a midweek clash on Wednesday night before returning home to face MSU Denver in Grand Junction next Sunday at 1 p.m.
