Dere's 13th Overshadowed In 3-1 Loss

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.Lila Dere scored another goal and Chloe Dody made seven saves, but the CMU women's soccer team could not repel every wave of the UCCS attack in a 3-1 loss in Grand Junction.

The match was scoreless at halftime, but as the game opened up and players got fatigued, goals came flooding from both directions in the second half.

The Mavericks started the match well, putting five shots on goal in the first half which were all saved by UCCS goalie Alexis Walker. Walker had to leave her feet to make the save on three occasions, denying Dere, freshman Talea Kuennen and redshirt sophomore Tatum Pfalmer late in the first half.

But if Walker was the star of the first half, her counterpart Dody stole the show in the second. The Mavs' goalie made five of her seven saves in the second half as UCCS started to find ways through the CMU defense.

Dody made three saves in a five-minute span between the 53rd and 57th minutes, the third of which was a leaping punch of a Liza Louthan shot destined for the top corner. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, UCCS midfielder Fie Stenberg was first to the ball and finished the rebound to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

The Mountain Lions got a second in the 69th minute after a CMU foul in the box allowed Makayla Merlo to score her first goal of the season from a penalty kick. The Mavs had an immediate answer this time, however, as Dere uncorked a 25-yard strike off a pass from Sophia Beames that arced over a leaping Walker and snuck under the crossbar to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute.

That goal, Dere's 13th of the season, was also the 35th of the redshirt sophomore's career. She will head into next week trailing alum Tiffany Thompson by one goal for the CMU all-time scoring record.

The Mountain Lions put away another loose ball to ice the game in the 81st minute, as Zoe Sims pounced on a incompletely cleared corner kick to put UCCS up 3-1.

Colorado Mesa fell back to 4-4-1 with the loss. They will hit the road next week, facing Colorado School of Mines next Friday and Regis next Sunday.
