Bryan Rescues Point With 89th-Minute Strike

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After Connor Durant saved a penalty kick to keep the Mavs within striking distance, Shane Bryan scored in the 89th minute to allow CMU to come away with a point in a 1-1 draw against UCCS from Community Hospital Unity Field.

Bryan's goal, assisted by Leo Mireles, was the first in the career of the redshirt sophomore defender. His right-footed boot from close range was the Mavs' only shot on goal attempt of the match.

UCCS outshot CMU 11-6 and collected three shots on goal to the Mavs' one. But the vaunted Mountain Lions defense, which entered the match having conceded only two goals in its opening nine games, was unable to keep a clean sheet to preserve the win.

A sluggish first half saw neither team collect a shot on goal until the 42nd minute, when UCCS forward Kolby Raineri fired a low central shot that CMU keeper Connor Durant scooped up.

The visitors appeared poised to take the lead just two minutes into the second half after winning a penalty kick, but Durant dove to his left to deny UCCS midfielder Marvin Putu before the CMU defense took care of the rebound.

Although Durant's clutch save kept the score tied for the moment, the Mountain Lions found the net 12 minutes later, when a Matteo Moreno Madrid cross found the head of forward Jack Souder.

Moises Martinez, Manuel Ponce Casas and Kevin Nunez had shot attempts as CMU pressed for an equalizer, but the Mavs still hadn't tested UCCS keeper Declan Domyan entering the 89th minute.

Leo Mireles, playing as a left back, sent a cross into the box that skipped through everyone. Bryan, who had entered the match for the first time just 10 minutes earlier, was unmarked and ran onto the ball near the right corner of the six-yard box. After taking a controlling touch, Bryan finished into the bottom left corner past Domyan, who had stopped 27 of 29 shots prior to that.

Ponce Casas nearly had a chance to win the match in the final seconds, but a UCCS defender made a key tackle just as the freshman was preparing to shoot.

Colorado Mesa moves to 5-3-1 with an 0-1-1 record in RMAC play. The Mountain Lions are 6-1-3. Next up, the Mavericks will hit the road to face Fort Lewis on Sept. 30 and Adams State on Oct. 2.
