Mavs Come Up Short After Frenetic Second Half

MONMOUTH, Ore. – In a frenetic match that featured three goals in the final ten minutes, Colorado Mesa women's soccer came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Western Oregon University.

For the second straight game, the Mavericks lost despite outshooting the opposition, taking 15 shots to WOU's 14 and putting eight on target to the Wolves' six.

The Mavs came out flying offensively, forcing four saves from WOU goalkeeper Olivia Holdenreid in the first 18 minutes, including a pair of shots on goal from redshirt sophomore midfielder Haley Klasner.

The breakthrough came in the 38th minute, when forward Lila Dere forced a save from Holdenreid and redshirt sophomore forward Addie Randel pounced on the rebound to put the Mavs ahead 1-0. It was the second goal of Randel's college career and first since last year's season-opening match against Texas Permian-Basin.

It only took Western Oregon 90 seconds to respond, however, as Emma Smith scored off an assist from Alyna Slater to tie the score at 1-1. The two teams stayed deadlocked until the 82nd minute, when the Mavs attempted to drop back to goalkeeper Ella Harrison but WOU's Savannah Taylor intercepted the pass, rounded the goalie and poked the ball in the net to give Western Oregon its first lead. Harrison, a freshman from Arvada, Colo., made three saves in her first collegiate start.

The Mavs got a chance to get back in the game when a handball in the box gave CMU a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Lila Dere stepped up to the spot and buried the PK into the bottom right corner to knot the game up at 2-2. Dere has now scored in both of CMU's matches this season.

But just like the Mavericks' first goal, Western Oregon had a response only a minute later. Lulu Sadler, a transfer from Division I Eastern Washington, hit a looping long-range shot that was too high for Harrison to reach and scooted under the crossbar for the winning goal in the 85th minute.

The Mavericks will return home in search of their first points of the season next week, facing Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Sept. 2 and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, Sept. 4 as part of the Colorado Mesa Kickoff Weekend.
