Three Mavericks Selected in MLB Draft

The Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft completed yesterday and saw a total of three former Mavericks selected for the first time in their careers.

Two-time consensus National Player of the Year Haydn McGeary was selected in the 15th round (Pick 443 overall) by the Chicago Cubs. McGeary led all of NCAA Division II in several offensive categories over his final two seasons including batting average, hits, home runs, slugging percentage, and total bases. He set the NCAA Division II career home run mark this season after blasting his 75th home run during the NCAA Super Region Tournament and led all of college baseball with 35 home runs this season.

During his time in a Maverick uniform, McGeary batted .448 (275 hits), 65 doubles, three triples, 75 home runs and 243 runs batted in. His home runs, RBIs and 571 total bases are all Colorado Mesa all-time program records. He is a two-time consensus NCAA South Central Region Player of the Year, RMAC Player of the Year, a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List recipient, and the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for baseball.

Two-time All-American catcher Spencer Bramwell was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 18th round (Pick 532 overall). Bramwell saved his best offensive season for his last. He batted .371 with 15 doubles, 23 home runs, and 65 runs batted in while throwing out 31 percent of would-be base stealers during his senior season. He was a consensus All-Region First Team selection and earned All-RMAC accolades for the third straight season. The San Clemente, Calif. native got it done in the classroom too, earning back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-American awards and RMAC Academic Player of the Year honors.

For his career, Bramwell batted .360 with 47 doubles, six triples, 46 home runs with 176 runs batted in. He was named to the 2019 NCAA National Championship Tournament Team after leading the Mavericks to the National Championship game. During the playoff run, he recorded a hit in nine of the 11 games the Mavericks played in the postseason.

Former Maverick ace Andrew Morris was selected in the fourth round (Pick 114 overall) by the Minnesota Twins. Morris spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career with Colorado Mesa where he accrued an 18-2 record with a 3.23 ERA in 33 appearances. During the 2021 season, he went 9-0 while striking out 115 batters in just 78 innings pitched. Following the season, he was named an All-American by the D2CCA.

Morris spent this past season at Texas Tech as their game one starter. He went 8-2 with a 4.58 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 88 and a third innings pitched.

Colorado Mesa University was the lone NCAA Division II school to have multiple selections in this year's draft.

With the three draft picks this year, that brings the Mavericks all-time MLB Draft pick total to 49. The trio are the first draft picks since 2018 when Kyle Leahy (17th, St. Louis Cardinals), Reagan Todd (32nd, Colorado Rockies), Zach McLeod (33rd, Baltimore Orioles) and Jake Mielock (40th, Pittsburgh Pirates) were selected.

Morris, McGeary and Bramwell will likely join former Mavericks Sergio Romo (Toronto Blue Jays-MLB), Bligh Madris (Pittsburgh Pirates-MLB, AAA), Reagan Todd (Colorado Rockies-AAA) and Kyle Leahy (St. Louis Cardinals-AA) in the ranks of professional baseball pending contract signings.
