Mavericks Claim 10th Straight RMAC Title

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The #17 Colorado Mesa Mavericks swept a doubleheader from the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves at The Diamond at Bus Bergman Sports Complex on Friday (May 6) evening. With the sweep, the Mavericks claim their 10th straight and 25th overall Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and earn the right to host the conference tournament next week.
 
In game one of the day, Conrad Villafuerte's pinch-hit, walk-off home run gave the Mavericks a 5-4 extra inning victory over the ThunderWolves.
 
Villafuerte entered the game for in the bottom of the eighth inning and deposited a 1-2 pitch into the bullpen in left field for his second home run of the season.
 
Spencer Bramwell, Julian Boyd and Johnny Carr all finished the game with two hits.
 
Bramwell belted his 19th home run of the season in the win.
 
The Mavericks also received a special performance from one of their seniors on the mound. Ryan Day pitched a complete game and allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out a season-high 13 to move his record to 5-0 on the season.
 
Day struck out six of the first nine batters he faced in the game with his only real trouble in the game coming in the fourth inning where he allowed three runs.
 
In the nightcap, the bomb squad returned to The Diamond in the championship clinching win as the Mavericks blasted five home runs in a 9-5 win over CSU Pueblo.
 
Haydn McGeary finished the game 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, three runs driven in and a walk. The two home runs gave him 26 for the season, eclipsing the single season home run record for the program. The record had stood since 1997 when Chris McClure hit 25 home runs.
 
Spencer Bramwell joined the 20-home run club with absolute bomb in the bottom of the third inning. He finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in.
 
Caleb Farmer finished the game with a 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. He hit his 22nd home run of the season in the bottom of fourth inning.
 
Senior Frankie Fitzgerald earned the win on the mound to move to 2-2 on the year. He allowed three runs on five hits, walked none and struck out three in four and a third innings pitched.
 
Cooper Vasquez closed out the game, pitching the final two and a third innings and allowed just one hit and struck out four.
 
The Mavericks will conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 1pm in the regular season finale. Prior to the game, Colorado Mesa will honor their 13 seniors.
