GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nation's 54
th-ranked MSU Denver Roadrunners rolled to a 7-0 men's tennis victory over Colorado Mesa University on Friday afternoon here at the Mavericks' Elliott Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners, 11-3 overall, won all three doubles matches and all six singles affairs, two of which were decided by tight 10-7 decisions in the third-set tiebreakers. They also won three exhibition singles matches.
CMU, playing for just the second time at home for and for the first time at their normal outdoor home all season, slipped to 4-15 heading into what will likely be their season finale against Colorado College on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
The Mavericks' best efforts came from
Christian Albrechtsen and
Tyler Landen in singles and from
Steven Howe and
Jandre van Wyk in doubles.
Howe and van Wyk battled to a tie-breaker at No. 2 doubles, but eventually were downed by the McDermott brothers— Jack and Billy— by a 7-4 margin in the breaker.
In singles, Albrechtsen won a second set tie-breaker in the No. 2 match, 10-8, but then succumbed to Carlos Pinedo, 10-7 in the overall match tie-breaker.
Landen was playing Andy Caruana at No. 5 singles and rallied to take the second set, 6-3 after dropping the first, 6-2. However, Caruana won 10 of the 17 points in the third set to win the match.
Senior Day festivities that will honor
Moises Cure, who was back in the lineup on Friday for the first time in nine matches after recovering from an injury, Albrechtsen and Howe will precede warm-ups for Sunday's match against the Tigers at 8:45 a.m.
