GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Moises Cure and
Steven Howe combined for four wins and pulled out tight 3-set singles victories to help the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team claim a hard-fought 6-1 team victory over visiting Colorado College on Sunday here at the Elliott Tennis Center in what will likely be the Mavericks' final match of the 2021-22 season.
Cure and Howe, who had also won doubles matches with their respective partners
Jandre van Wyk and
Jorge Abreu earlier in the morning, were recognized prior to the Senior Day dual along with Christian Abrechtsen, who was not as fortunate as his fellow "seniors" in their Sunday results.
With the win, the Mavericks closed out the regular season with a 5-15 overall record and swept the 3-dual season series with the Tigers, who fell to 9-7 overall.
The Mavs also went 2-1 in their limited home schedule and finished off their eighth straight home-court winning season.
The Mavs will officially learn their Pacific West Conference Tournament selection fate on Monday but came into the weekend ranked tenth in the conference rankings. Only the top eight teams will be selected. CMU had dropped a 7-0 decision to the PacWest's sixth-ranked MSU Denver Roadrunners on Friday afternoon in what was their final match against NCAA Division II opposition.
Assuming they are not selected, the Mavs wrapped up their season on a high note winning five of the singles matches against the Division III Tigers with Howe and Cure both coming from a set down to win at No. 1 and 4, respectively.
Howe, the Mavs' captain, dropped the first set tiebreaker to Aiden Little, 7-4, but rallied for a 7-5 second set win before pulling out a 6-4 third-set to clinch the dual for his side. Howe won all three of his top flight matches against Little in the three duals against the Tigers this season.
Meanwhile, Cure split the opening two sets (4-6, 6-4) against Lucas Pastor before winning the third set in a tie-breaker, 7-5 to claim his first singles win since Feb. 12. Cure had missed eight duals due to injury before returning to the lineup this weekend.

Abreu,
Tyler Landen and
Tegan Hartman also won singles matches for the Mavs in straight sets. Abreu was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Jack Delafield at No. 3 while Landen was a dominant 6-2, 6-0 winner over Nate Beerman at No. 5.
Hartman battled for a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win over Alex Kley at No. 6 in the final match of the dual. The Maverick freshman from Idaho Falls, Idaho recorded a team-leading 11 singles wins this season.
The Mavericks had come into doubles play with a 1-0 team lead after Cure and Abreu knocked off Beerman and Delafield at No. 3 by a 6-1 margin. Howe and van Wyk then finished off Kley and Little, 6-2, just minutes later.
The Tigers did get a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles from Andrew Kaelin and Pastor over Albrechtsen and Landen. Kaelin also won his No. 2 singles match over Albrechtsen in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to register the Tigers' lone team point.
The Mavs also won two of the three exhibition matches played. Hartman and
Matt Miller were 6-2 winners over Joseph Dryer and August Knox in doubles while van Wyk registered an 8-6 win over Knox in singles play.
Assuming the Mavs are not selected for the PacWest Tournament, Howe will finish his career with 67 wins and plans to serve as an assistant coach for the Mavs next season. Albrechtsen won 51 times while Cure posted 42.
Each of the Mavs' redshirt juniors are eligible to return for a fifth year if they later decide to make use of the NCAA's COVID eligibility waiver granted because of the cancelation of a significant portion of the 2019-20 season.
