Late Scoring Spree Lifts Mavericks to Win over Mountain Lions

Jakeman tallies seven goals to lead scoring effort, tied for second most in team history.

Colorado Springs, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's Taylor Jakeman had a field day, scoring a career best seven goals in the Mavericks defeat of UCCS on Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium. The final 19-15 score, in favor of the Mavs gave way to their third win in conference play, and fifth overall.

Jakeman's offensive success was one shy of a school record, and tied for the second most in team history. Regan Wentz and Brianna Anderson contributed three goals each, Ashton Whittle, Ali Bryant and Kiley Davis each with a pair to their name.

With a 39-28 edge in shots, the Mavs also led in ground balls (27) and draw controls (25). All three Maverick goalies logged minutes in today's match, Adelaine Charlsen getting credit with the win. Lula Mitchell recorded eight saves in her 38 minutes, her best to date.

Quick to get on the board, Colorado Mesa jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Davis and Jakeman scoring within a minute of each other for the early lead.

Midway through the first period, UCCS managed to tie it up at three, eventually taking the lead at 5:27 on a free position shot.

Anderson found the back of the net under the 30-second mark, knotting it at four. Short lived, the Mountain Lions won the opening draw control, converting it to the leading goal, 5-4 at the end of the first.

The UCCS lead would push to two as they scored in the opening minutes of the second. Mitchell then came up with back to back saves to prevent another Mountain Lions score.

Finding themselves down by three, CMU went on a 3-0 run to once again tie it up. Refusing to go into the break down, Wentz put in her 17th goal of the season to make it even going into the half.

Fast forward to the final period, the Mavericks went up for good at 4:35, Ashton Whittle taking full advantage of a woman-up opportunity, connecting with Davis for her 8th of the season.

Two consecutive yellow cards on the Mountain Lions opened up a scoring spree by the Mavs – their final four goals to secure the win.

The team's road swing continues as they head in the opposite direction to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Westminster College on Wednesday (April 6). Opening draw scheduled for 7 p.m. on Dumke Field.
