Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team came out victorious and took down the UCCS Mountain Lions in a 16-13 win Thursday evening at home.
The Mavericks (12-4 overall, 10-1 RMAC) were neck and neck with UCCS (10-6 overall, 7-4 RMAC) as the first period ended in a 2-2 tie. The first goal came from Reagan Wentz with 8:18 remaining but UCCS followed with a goal less than a minute later. Wentz continued to fight her way to the net as she responded with a second goal assisted by
Melanie Evans.
The Mavericks began to take control and pull away as they outscored UCCS 7-3 in the second period. UCCS started off the period with a goal, but the Mavericks immediately answered and began to find the back of the net. Three goals from
Kiley Davis, two from
Ashton Whittle, and one goal a piece from
Ali Bryant and
Brianna Anderson in the second period allowed the Mavericks to have a lead for the rest of the game.
Ashton Whittle and
Kiley Davis did not let up as Whittle ended the game with a total of five goals and Davis concluded with four goals.
Molly Gilbert found the back of the net to get the final goal of the game along with Evans getting two goals and four assists for the evening.
Shannon Murphy started in goal and got a season high of five ground balls and eight saves.
The Mavericks had a 20-13 edge in draw controls and took 35 shots with 23 coming on goal.
Natalie Church led the way for UCCS with four goals, followed by Hannah Mill with three and three other Mountain Lions received two goals apiece.
Up next for the Mavericks is Saturday, Apr. 30 at 1:00 p.m. on Community Hospital Unity Field to celebrate senior day and conclude the RMAC regular season.
