LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team continued their winning ways on Saturday (Apr. 23) with a doubleheader sweep of the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys in a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Contests at Brandt Field.
In the day's opener, the Mavericks got a strong pitching performance while continuing to swing it at a high level in a 16-3 win over the Cowboys.
Cooper Vasquez pitched a complete game as he allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out seven to pick up his fourth win of the season. He surrendered his first hit in the third inning and retired nine in a row entering the seventh inning.
The Maverick batters used two big innings to jump ahead of the Cowboys as they scored six runs in the first inning and seven runs in the fifth inning.
Chase Hamilton,
Conrad Villafuerte and
Johnny Carr all finished the game with three hits. Carr drove in four while Hamilton drove in three. Villafuerte had two run scoring doubles in his plate appearances.
Slugger
Haydn McGeary appeared to get back on track in the game as he went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and four runs driven in. He hit the first of two home runs in the game in the second inning when he launched a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right field. His second of the game came in the fifth on an 0-2 pitch that was hammered to left center field.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks scored runs in five of the seven innings they batted in during a 12-5 win over New Mexico Highlands and run their win streak to four games.
Harrison Rodgers and
Haydn McGeary each finished with three hits in the game. Rodgers hit his 12
th home run of the season in the fifth inning as he deposited a 0-0 pitch over the fence in left field.
Caleb Farmer,
Spencer Bramwell, Villafuerte, and Carr all had two hits in the game. Bramwell launched his 16
th home run of the season in the third inning on a 2-1 pitch that gave the Mavericks a 4-0 lead at the time.
Everyone in the starting lineup had a hit.
Frankie Fitzgerald got the start for the second straight week but this time went five innings to earn his first win of the season. The senior allowed three runs on three hits and didn't walk anyone or strike anyone out. He retired the last six batters he faced.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 12pm with a single nine-inning game.
