SURPRISE, Ariz.— The future looks bright.
Colorado Mesa University's three freshmen in the starting women's tennis lineup all won singles matches while two of them teamed together for a doubles victory as well to lead the Mavericks' efforts in a Pacific West Conference Championship consolation match against Concordia University Irvine on Thursday evening here at the Surprise Tennis Center.
However, the 12
th seeded Mavericks fell just shy of the eighth-seeded Eagles, who claimed a 4-3 win in both teams' final dual of the season.
CMU finishes their second year in the PacWest with an 11-15 record. CUI, which had knocked off the Mavs' 6-1 back on Mar. 4 in regular season play, went 9-14.
The teams split the singles matches evenly as the Maverick youngsters
Makenna Livingston,
Macy Richards and
Paige Furin were all straight set victors in singles. Livingston and Richards also posted a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles match over the Eagles' Tiffany Carrillo and Maya Arksey.
However, Alicia Da Re and Jennifer Jolin won a No. 3 doubles tie-breaker over
Julianna Campos and Furin minutes later to give the Eagles the doubles point, which proved to be the difference.
The Eagles had also won the No. 2 doubles, match 6-1.
Richards quickly evened the overall score with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 No. 5 singles win over Kimia Rahmani at No. 4. In the process, Richards finished her initial season on a high note with a 3-match winning streak and 15 singles wins, tied with
Maike Waldburger, who likely played her final match as a Maverick, for the team lead.
Furin then gave the Mavericks a brief 2-1 team lead with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jolin at No. 6.
Da Re then answered right back just two minutes later with a 6-3, 6-1 No. 5 singles win before Arksey gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage in the dual, sealing up a 6-2, 7-5 No. 2 singles victory just two minutes after Da Re.
The Mavericks would not go away as Livingston responsed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Carillo in the top flight.
However, the Mavs would fall short as Alyssa Zayat held on for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over CMU's
Halle Romero in the No. 3 match.
Livingston went 13-12 in singles play during her freshman season, ending it on a 4-match winning streak. Furin posted a solid 10-2 record and finished on a 3-match winning streak.
Waldburger, a redshirt junior from Germany who is unlikely to return for her fifth season of eligibility permitted under a COVID-related NCAA eligibility waiver, finished the season with 27 victories, tied for Richards for the team-lead. The team captain also won 86 matches in her four seasons with the Mavs, including the abbreviated 2020 campaign and is amongst the top 20 Mavericks in program history for both singles (44) and doubles victories (42).
