The Mavericks Sail Through the Griffins in 20-1 Win at Home

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team defeated Westminster Griffins 20-1 to earn another RMAC win Wednesday evening at Community Hospital Unity Field.
 
The Mavericks (10-4 overall, 8-1 RMAC) were unstoppable on defense as they allowed one goal that came in the first period. The Mavericks caused 24 turnovers, gained 27 ground balls and had a 19-6 edge in draw controls – Ashton Whittle contributed with eight draw controls and Nici Boutwelll had six.
 
Offensively, the Mavericks took 52 shots compared to Griffins (4-8 overall, 4-5 RMAC) six with 32 shots coming on goal. Taylor Jakeman and Kiley Davis hit four goals apiece with Whittle and Brianna Anderson following behind with two goals each and eight different Mavericks scored one goal each.
 
The Mavericks outscored the Griffins in each period as they hit four goals each in the first and second period with six goals falling in the third and fourth period each.
 
Davis continues to lead in goals with 33 and Jakeman just behind her with 30 goals.
 
This week's RMAC Offensive Player of the Week Melanie Evans contributed six assists along with one goal – Evans now has 21 assists on the season.
 
Eden Freiberg had the lone Griffins goal that happened early with three minutes into the first period. Freiberg leads with Griffins with 26 goals.
 
The Mavericks sit second in goals behind Regis with 188 finding the back of the net while keeping their opponents to 122 goals. The Mavericks are averaging 32.0 shots per game with a .702 shot on goal percentage.
 
Up next for the Mavericks is the last away regular season conference game in Pueblo, Colo. at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium Sunday, Apr. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
