Mavs end slide with 7-2 win at CC

Three CMU players go 2-0 in final road dual of regular season

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Steven Howe, Tyler Landen and Jandre van Wyk all went 2-0 to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team to a 7-2 away win over Colorado College on Saturday here at Memorial Park.  The Mavericks' win snapped a 6-match slide and moved them to 4-14 on the season.  Two of their wins have come against the Tigers (8-5).

Saturday's match was played with Division III rules and under the 9-point format which meant that all three doubles matches were worth a full point.

The Mavs, who had posted a 7-0 win over the Tigers in the fall under the 7-point Division II format in September, won two of those doubles matches on Saturday.

Christian Albrechtsen and Landen pulled out an 8-7 (8-6) win over Jack Delafield and Andrew Kaelin at No. 1 while Howe and van Wyk were 8-3 winners over Alex Kley and Lucas Pastor at No. 2.

The Tigers won the No. 3 match, 8-3.

The Mavericks then won five of the six singles matches, including three in straight sets.  They also won two of the three that went to a third-set match tie-breaker.

Howe was a 6-2, 6-4 victor over Aiden Little in the top flight while Kaelin came from a set down to defeat Albrechtsen, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) in a No. 2 thriller.

CMU's Jorge Abreu had a nearly as thrilling win in the third flight, defeating Delafield, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 1-0 (10-3).  Landen also pulled out a victory at No. 4 singles, defeating Pastor, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).

Van Wyk and freshman Tegan Hartman had an easier time in the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.  Van Wyk was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Nate Beerman while Hartman defeated Kley, 6-2, 6-2.

The Mavericks will now return home for their final two matches of the regular season, which will be just their second and third home affairs of the entire season.

They will host MSU Denver on Friday (Apr. 8) before capping the regular season with another match against the Tigers on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 10 a.m.
