DENVER— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team won the doubles point but could not claim any singles wins as in-state rival and fellow Pacific West Conference affiliate member MSU Denver claimed a 6-1 dual victory over the Mavericks on Friday afternoon here at the Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Roadrunners, who were ranked 43
rd nationally last week before slipping out of the top-50 this week, improved to 9-3 as a team while the Mavericks fell to 3-14.
The Mavericks won both the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to take the early team lead.
Steven Howe and
Jandre van Wyk were 6-3 winners over Billy McDermott and Alejandro Jimenez to clinch the doubles point with their second flight victory after
Jorge Abreu and
Tegan Hartman won for the fourth time in the last five matches at No. 3 doubles over Jeanloup Auzias and Dayton Fisher.
However, the Roadrunners stormed back to win all six doubles matches, including five in two sets.
Van Wyk was a 6-3 first-set winner over David Kijak at No. 5 before Kijak reversed the score in the second before taking the match tie-breaker, 10-5.
Abreu also put up a valiant fight at No. 3 singles but was downed by Jimenez, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3.
Howe also won seven games against Auzias, ranked 69
th nationally in singles. However the Frenchman won the match, 6-3, 6-4.
CMU's
Matt Miller did win an exhibition match over Fisher, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
The Mavericks will play at Division III Colorado College on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Colorado Springs.
