GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse team kept the visiting Fort Lewis Skyhawks scoreless in two of the four periods, conceding just four goals on the afternoon on the way to a 15-4 victory Sunday on Community Hospital Unity Field.
The Mavericks (2-0) were led by
Regan Wentz with four goals,
Taylor Jakeman and
Ashton Whittle both finished with a hat trick. Five others netted goals for the Mavs,
Kiley Davis dishing out a pair of assists.
Shannon Murphy held strong between the pipes, logging all 60 minutes and making four saves for the win, moving her to 2-0 on the young season.
The Mavs used an edge in shots (34-11, draw controls (14-9), and ground balls (19-14). The defensive unit caused 15 turnovers,
Brianna Anderson,
Taylor Jakeman and
Taylor Scott each with a pair.
Just 20 seconds into the game,
Caroline Ohngemach put the Mavs on the board, netting her second goal of the season.
Ashton Whittle would follow up with her first goal of the season a minute later for the early 2-0 lead.
The Skyhawks would put through two quick goals to even the score. Just before the end of the first period they would net a third, the Mavs holding a slight 4-3 lead. It would be all CMU in the second period, building their lead to 7-3 at the half.
In the third, Mikki Brown found her way through scoring what would be the team's last goal of the afternoon.
The Mavs continued to score adding three goals in the third, a handful in the fourth for the eventual 15-4 score.
Colorado Mesa will continue their three-game home stand welcoming McKendree to Grand Junction for a midweek matchup on March 16. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
