IRVINE, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University's
Issy Coman,
Halle Romero and
Julianna Campos all won matches to lead the Maverick women's tennis team in a 6-1 loss to Pacific West Conference rival Concordia University Irvine on Friday afternoon here at the CUI Tennis Courts.
Coman and Romero teamed for a 6-2 doubles win over Maya Arksey and Grace Gorges in the third flight while Campos won the third-set tie-breaker by four points (10-6) in a No. 6 singles win over Gorges. The complete scoreline was 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 as Campos snapped a 4-match slide in singles play.
However, the Eagles, receiving votes in the latest (Feb. 17) ITA NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, won the other five singles matches and took the doubles point with wins in the top two flights.
In the process, CUI improved to 4-4 as a team while the Mavericks fell to 4-7.
Four of the Eagles' singles wins came in straight sets although Coman put up a good fight against Tiffany Carrillo at No. 1, before going down 7-5, 6-2.
Freshman
Macy Richards also went toe-to-toe with Alicia Da Re at No. 5 singles, but eventually succumbed, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 11-9.
The Mavericks will wrap up a 3-day swing through California on Saturday taking on another PacWest rival in Point Loma in San Diego.
