GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Erupting for a combined 20 goals in their season and conference opener, the Colorado Mesa (1-0) women's lacrosse team had contributions from 14 different players Friday evening, roaring to their first win over the visiting Adams State Grizzlies.
Kiley Davis led the way with six points, collecting four goals and handing out a pair of assists.
Melanie Evans added two goals, alongside true freshman
Ali Bryant who tallied two goals, an assist and a team high five ground balls in her Maverick debut.
The freshman class came out in full force as
Caroline Ohngemach served as the main distributor with four assists, adding a goal to her offensive efforts.
Molly Gilbert aided in all aspects with two goals an assist, causing two turnovers and collecting three ground balls.
Not a lot of action happened in the Mavericks defensive third,
Shannon Murphy grabbing the start in goal and the win.
Leading from start to finish, the Mavs held a 18-6 advantage in draw controls, 23-6 in ground balls, and held the Grizzlies to just a single shot.
Davis wasted no time getting on the board, scoring her first goal of the afternoon and the season just 15 seconds after the opening whistle. She would go on to add three more goals in the first quarter before retiring for the night.
By the end of the first quarter the Mavs had built up to an 11-0 lead, spreading out their other nine across the remaining three quarters.
They will ride the momentum into Sunday, playing host Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. on Community Hospital Unity Field.
