IRVINE, Calif.— Steven Howe and
Tegan Hartman claimed 3-set singles wins to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team's efforts against the nation's 25
th-ranked Concordia University Irvine on Friday here the CUI Tennis Courts.
However, the Eagles won the other four singles matches and took the doubles point to claim a 5-2 team win while improving to 3-4 on the season. The Mavericks dropped their seventh straight dual and fell to 2-7.
Howe recorded a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win in his No. 1 singles match over Leon Czamikau while Hartman claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Adrian D'auost.
Tyler Landen, playing just his second singles match of the year, also won the second set of his No. 4 affair against Mike Jansen but was downed, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The Eagles also won the No. 2, 3 and 5 singles matches in straight sets after posting wins in the first doubles flights. Two of those singles wins came from regionally-ranked Eagles.
Jan Simon, ranked tenth in the West Region, was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over
Christian Albrechtsen at No. 2 while Adam Large, ranked sixth in the region, was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 3 over
Jorge Abreu.
The No. 3 doubles match, which featured Hartman and
Moises Cure, a late scratch from the singles lineup, was left unfinished at 5-5. The Eagles had posted 6-4 and 6-2 wins in the two completed doubles affairs.
The Mavericks will conclude their 3-day swing through California when they take on another fellow Pacific West Conference foe in Point Loma in San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
