SAN DIEGO— Jorge Abreu claimed a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 singles win over regionally-ranked Lukas Schuster to give the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team a point in their 6-1 defeat at the hands of Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday afternoon.
Although the Sea Lions (5-5) won the other five singles matches and the doubles point, Saturday's dual had some very tight matches.
Abreu, who knocked off the West Region's ninth-ranked player in Schuster by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 margin, was one of three Mavericks that played in set tie-breakers.
Steve Howe, who played at No. 1 singles against West Region No. 13 Tyler Davis, won the first set, 6-3 before Davis took the second in a tie-breaker, winning it 7-2. Davis then won the match tie-breaker, 10-6.
Meanwhile,
Moises Cure put up quite a fight against regional No. 17 David Strassburger at No. 2 singles. Strassburger won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-5 before claiming the match with a 6-3 second-set win.
The Mavericks (2-8) will now return home to play their first match of the season at the Elliott Tennis Center next Saturday (Mar. 12) when they face another fellow Pacific West Conference rival in Fresno Pacific University. The Mavericks place seven of their first ten matches this season on the road while playing another three on neutral courts.
