Spearfish, S.D. – It took an extra period to decide the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference semifinal between Colorado Mesa (24-9) and Regis (20-9), the Rangers spoiling the Mavericks tournament run, 79-76.
Just like the first time the two teams met, the stats were fairly even across the board. Each team shot at 50 percent from the field, the Mavericks with a couple more 3-point baskets in their favor. The deciding factor coming down to free throws, which the Rangers were allotted twice as many opportunities.
Trevor Baskin recorded 22-points to lead the team,
Blaise Threatt following with 17,
Reece Johnson (14) and
Jared Small (10) the other double-figure contributors. Threatt led with a trio of 3-pointers, boarding eight on the defensive side.
As the teams swapped point scoring from the first to the second half, the Mavericks sparked a second half comeback holding a two-point lead with 2 minutes to play. Throwing up threes in last second efforts to grab the win, neither team's efforts would fall sending it to extra minutes.
With an and-one to start the period, it would go back and forth until the final minute when Regis started to inch away. Johnson would lay it in in the final seconds for the 3-point deficit, but not enough to push them ahead.
The NCAA Selection Show is set to air at 8:30 p.m. MT on Sunday, where the Mavericks will await their fate of making a third consecutive NCAA Tournament.
