SAINT LEO, Fla. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse closed out their time in Florida with a big time win over Saint Leo, taking a 13-12 overtime victory over the 23
rd ranked Lions.
The Mavericks move to 3-2 on the season, the Lions falling to 3-6.
Regan Wentz netted a team high three goals,
Brianna Anderson,
Ashton Whittle and
Kiley Davis each with a pair.
The game winner though credited to
Taylor Jakeman at the 2:26 mark in OT.
CMU held a 25-21 edge in ground balls,
Lula Mitchell stepping into the goal making six key saves in the win.
Though the Mavs claimed the last goal, it was the Lions who drew blood first, taking a 2-0 lead.
CMU then rallied off three goals to overtake the lead. At an even four a piece going into the second, it would be Saint Leo who outscored the Mavs, 4-2 on the way to an 8-6 edge going into the break.
Anderson got things going in the third, opening up a 4-1 scoring effort in favor of the Mavs and the 10-9 lead with one period remaining.
With under 30 seconds left to play, Saint Leo's Maria Palomba scored the team's 12
th goal and the late lead.
Ali Bryant, who finished with a team best five draw controls won the ensuing possession for the Mavs. Looking to score with the clock winding down, a yellow card to the Lions gave way to a woman-up opportunity, Wentz taking full advantage of the free-position shot, getting through for the tying goal.
Sent to extra minutes, yet again Bryant would be credited with the draw control, setting up the final deciding play. Fielding the pass from Anderson, Jakeman dodged around the defender setting up a one-on-one, placing it passed the goalie to clinch the win.
