AZUSA, Calif.— Jorge Abreu,
Tegan Hartman and
Tyler Landen each won matches to lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks' efforts in their Saturday afternoon tennis match against national No. 22 Azusa Pacific University here at the Cougars' Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Cougars, hot off a Friday win over No. 5 Indianapolis, won two of the three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 overall lead and then claimed straight-set victories in four of the six singles matches en-route to the 6-1 victory. They are now 10-4 overall.
The Mavericks fell to 3-10 as Landen gave them their only team point with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Ian Lee at No. 4 singles.
Jandre van Wyk also won a set in the No. 5 singles affair taking the first set 7-5 before Caden Samkutty won the second via a tie-breaker. Samkutty then won the match tie-breaker, 10-5.
In doubles, Abreu and Hartman had won their third flight match over Dylan Parsley and Ivan Noel Hornung , 6-2. However, the Cougars won the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 and then a 7-5 No. 1 victory by Ethan Smith and Sam Sippel over Landen and
Christian Albrechtsen, who had won their previous two match-ups.
The Mavericks will now head to Fresno to play massively important matches with other Pacific West Conference foes. They play Holy Names on Sunday and then at Fresno Pacific on Monday before wrapping up the trip on Tuesday morning against Hawai'i Hilo.
