FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped a heart-breaking 4-3 neutral-court decision to Pacific West Conference rival Holy Names University on Sunday afternoon.
Tegan Hartman won both of his matches to lead the Mavericks (3-11) as he and
Jorge Abreu won their No 3 doubles match, 6-3 over Alfonso De Simon and Ramiro Perez. Hartman then defeated Perez by a 6-4, 6-3 margin at No. 6 singles to level the dual at 1 after the Hawks had taken the first and second doubles matches.
The Hawks then went on to win three of the next four completed singles matches to seize control as Ellison Greco edged CMU's
Christian Albrechtsen, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles before
Jandre van Wyk answered for the Mavs with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory over De Simon at No. 5 to tie the dual at 2.
However, Driss Elahcene and Mario Alviz both came from a set down to win the third sets of their No. 3 and 4 singles matches by identical 6-4 scores.
Elahcene was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Abreu at No. 3 singles while Alviz won 2-6, 6-2, -4 over
Tyler Landen at No. 4.
Steven Howe did salvage a late point for the Mavs, edging Raj Bhatia, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) in a top-flight thriller.
The Mavericks continue their season on Monday taking on the host Sunbirds for the second time in 10 days. The Mavericks had defeated FPU by a 5-2 score at home on Mar. 11.
