GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 6 Colorado Mesa baseball team swept the Saturday (Mar. 19) doubleheader from the UCCS Mountain Lions to guarantee the series win over the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe.
In the opening game of the day, the Mavericks used the big inning to overwhelm the Mountain Lions 12-0 to claim the first win of the day. The Mavericks had only eight hits in the game and also capitalized on the mistakes UCCS made in the field.
Haydn McGeary got the Maverick offense started in the bottom of the third inning as he belted a three-run home run to left field. Later in the inning,
Spencer Bramwell hit a two-run double to left field to make it 5-0 after three innings.
Colorado Mesa was able to tack on one run in the fifth inning then exploded for six more runs in the sixth inning for the 12-0 advantage. The sixth was highlighted by a RBI double by
Ethan Ezor.
Righty
Blake Rohm got the start on the mound and earned his third win of the season. Rohm (3-1) allowed just two hits and struck out four in five innings of work and retired the final seven batters he faced.
He gave way to
Dave Henderson who pitched the final two innings to preserve the shutout.
In the nightcap,
Kannon Handy earned his fourth win of the season as he kept the Mountain Lion bats at bay just enough in a 10-5 win for the Mavericks.
Handy, fresh off the program's eighth no-hitter, allowed two runs on seven hits while he struck out 10 batters in his five innings of work. He retired six batters in a row including three consecutive strikeouts in the top of the UCCS third inning.
He gave way to his bullpen and
Gage Edwards was up first. Edwards retired the Mountain Lions in order with a perfect three strikeout inning.
Freshman
Kyle Miller entered for the seventh and despite giving up three runs, he was able to work out of a jam and help the Mavericks to the win.
Offensively, the 2-3 punch in the order came through again.
Caleb Farmer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs driven in including a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Just after the RBI single, McGeary stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the day, this one a three-run shot to right center field to give the Mavericks a 9-2 lead. He finished with two runs scored as well.
Colorado Mesa improved to 18-5 on the season and 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The two teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12pm at Bergman Field.
