Men's Basketball Soar to Overtime Victory

Durango, Colo. – With double-digit contributions from four players and a locked down defense, the Colorado Mesa (23-8, 17-5 RMAC) men's basketball team prevailed over Fort Lewis (19-8, 15-6 RMAC) in overtime Saturday in Whalen Gymnasium.

In a game with 13 ties and 17 lead changes, the Mavericks held the lead for just over 26-minutes of the night. Using a 36-26 advantage of points in the paint and 13 fast break points behind nine steals, the Mavs finished the night 27-63 (42.9%) and drained three more, 3-pointers than the Skyhawks on the way to victory.

Blaise Threatt picked up his second double-double of the season, with a team leading 19-points and a game high 14-rebounds. Mac Riniker tallied 18-points, Jared Small and Christopher Speller with 14 each. Speller and Threatt accounted for three assists and a steal.

Leading 32-28 after the first half, the Skyhawks would respond with a 41-point second half. Back and forth throughout, the Mavs largest lead came at 18-8 early on.

The Skyhawks took their largest lead at 66-59 at the 3:46 mark in the second. Overcoming that deficit, Small laid one in for the 69-68 lead with just over a minute to play. A foul sent Fort Lewis to the free throw line, Jaquess Hobbs missing his first attempt but making the second to tie it up at 69 and force the extra minutes.

Coming up short in the previous overtime outings, the Mavs left no doubt this time around outscoring the Skyhawks 12-6 in the extra period. A dunk by Riniker gave way to a 75-74 edge, the Skyhawks yet again missing the opportunity to take the lead on free throws. However, CMU would go 6-6 on their free throw attempts deciding the final 81-75 score.

Riley Farris had a double-double of his own with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Qualifying for the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament, the Mavericks will host a first-round match up on Tuesday, March 1 in Brownson Arena.
