GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team needed a big, signature win on their postseason resume and on Saturday (Feb. 19) night in Brownson Arena they got it. The Mavericks secured an 81-74 win over the No. 13 Colorado School of Mines for their ninth straight win to improve to 21-4 on the season.
It was also senior night in Brownson Arena and the Mavericks got some special performances out of their seniors.
Senior
Daniella Turner led all scorers with 28 points on 9-for-16 shooting and was perfect from a spot she has struggled with all year…from beyond the arc where she was 4-for-4.
Senior
Mariah Martin finished with 20 points on 5-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. Martin did hit a pair of fast-break three pointers to help the Mavericks extend the lead late in the game.
Colorado Mesa shot 55.3 percent from the field in the game which was the second highest percentage of the year and highest since November 19.
Senior
Sophie Anderson and
Emily Cavey drew the tough defensive matchups of Orediggers Denali Pinto and Sammy Van Sickle respectively. Anderson limited Pinto to just two shots from the field and five total points while Cavey came off the bench to help provide help on Van Sickle as she was on her hot streak.
Colorado School of Mines was led by the 21 points and eight rebounds by Sammy Van Sickle. Van Sickle was 8-for-15 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc including three straight possessions in the second quarter.
The Mavericks will be on the road for the final two games of the regular season. They are set to take on Western Colorado on Thursday and then have a day off before taking on Fort Lewis on Saturday.
