Grand Junction, CO – With the home advantage this time around and in front of a packed house, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team avenged their earlier season loss to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Saturday (Feb. 19) in Brownson Arena. By a score of 72-62, the Mavericks claimed their sixth straight victory, matching last seasons win total (21).
The game also served as senior night,
Jared Small and
Georgie Dancer being prior to tip-off.
Blaise Threatt scored a career high 27-points on 8-16 from the field and 10-11 at the charity stripe, adding in four assists. Small tallied 17-points going 4-8 from 3-point range. One of those threes came in the final two minutes of play, banking one in off the back board to give the Mavs a 11-point lead.
Down by as many as 13 in the first half, a 10-0 run by the Mavs under the 5-minute mark whittled the deficit to one. Two possessions later, Threatt came up with the steal making a fast break to the basket giving way to their first lead of the night. They would go into the break with a 36-34 edge.
The Orediggers would tie the game briefly in the opening minutes of the second half, but the remainder of the night went the way of the Mavs who led by as many as 12.
Mac Riniker found himself in some foul trouble early on, but came back with some key 3-pointers and a statement dunk early in the second half.
Mines finished with a higher shooting percentage, but were plagued by 23 turnovers, the Mavs taking full advantage with 21-points off those turnovers. On top of those turnovers, the Mavs benefitted from a few of the Orediggers top-players getting into foul trouble.
Brendan Sullivan led the scoring with 30-points on 6-11 from beyond the arc. Adam Krasovec was the other Oredigger in double-figures with 12, also pulling down 8 rebounds.
Colorado Mesa will close out the regular season on the road with rivalry matches against Western Colorado Thursday (Feb. 24), followed by Fort Lewis on Saturday (Feb. 26)
