Mavericks Take Series from Yellowjackets

Grand Junction, Colo. – Colorado Mesa closed out their four-game set with the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets with a 6-3 victory highlighted by a Haydn McGeary two run home run. His third of the season, the Glendale, Arizona native has 43 in his career tying leader Chris McClure (1997).

The junior gave the Mavericks that momentum that they were looking for throughout the first few innings. With senior Caleb Farmer on base McGeary hit a no doubt home run to left field. His single through the left side of the field also scored Chase Hamilton in the seventh.

To get the scoring started for the Mavericks senior Spencer Bramwell hit a long triple to right center that scored sophomore Harrison Rodgers. That was in response to James Anderson scoring on a fielder's choice hit by Cooper Dulich.

Senior Jordan Stubbings hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth when he came into the game for sophomore Stevenson Reynolds. Hamilton added on the Mavericks lead hitting an RBI single up the middle.

Dulich got his second RBI of the day for the Yellowjackets in the fourth as he singled up the center allowing Tyler Godfrey to score. He finished the day 1- 4 with two RBIs.

Connor Redmond put up a solid start for the Yellowjackets as he went 5 ⅓ innings with six hits, four runs, six strikeouts and zero walks.

Junior Isaac Hayen got his first start of the season for the Mavericks after coming in as a reliever last weekend against Azusa Pacific. Hayen got into a couple of jams but with a calm demeanor and a strong and athletic defense behind him he was able to escape with minimal damage done.

Hayen pitched five innings for the Mavericks and only gave up two runs on five hits. He walked one batter and struck out three.

The ball then went to sophomore Cooper Vasquez. Vasquez was able to show the depth of the CMU bullpen while going three innings with four strikeouts. Freshman Kyle Miller closed out the game only pitching the ninth. He allowed two hits and one run but in the end was able to secure the win for his team.

CMU will continue their homestand but will welcome new opponent Northwest Nazarene University to Grand Junction, Colo. on Feb.24 at 2:30 p.m.
