Mavericks Sweep Season Opening Series

AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa baseball team swept a four-game series from No. 22 Azusa Pacific after they claimed the win in game four this afternoon (Feb. 12) 18-14 at Cougar Baseball Complex in non-conference action.

The Mavericks once again used all different types of offense to produce their 18 runs.

They benefited from seven walks with four of those coming around to eventually score.

Colorado Mesa manufactured runs as they laid down three sacrifice bunts. Four of the runners that moved up on those bunts came around to score in the game. The Mavericks also reached on three errors including Julian Boyd in the eighth inning. Boyd reached on a throwing error by the second baseman then proceeded to steal second base and moved up on a throwing error by the catcher. Boyd then scored the go-ahead run on a balk by the Azusa Pacific pitcher.

The Mavericks also used the long ball like they have all weekend. They launched five home runs on the day including two off the bat of senior Caleb Farmer. Julian Boyd and Conrad Villafuerte joined in the long ball brigade. Harrison Rodgers also hit another home run with he and Farmer each finishing with six bombs on the weekend.

Boyd finished the game 3-for-7 with three runs scored and four runs driven in while Villafuerte went 3-for-6 with one run and five runs driven in. Farmer and Rodgers each had three hits in the game as well.

Five different pitchers made appearances in the game, and all allowed at least one run in the game. Blake Rohm was the final pitcher in the game and earned the win in relief allowing one run on one hit, walked one and struck out two.

It was the first time since 2016 that Azusa Pacific had been swept in a four-game series. That year they dropped all four games to Cal State Monterey Bay. They were also swept by Cal State Monterey Bay in a three-game series in 2020.

The Mavericks will return home for their home opener next week in Grand Junction. They are set to take on Montana State Billings in a four-game series beginning on Thursday.
