GLENDALE, Ariz.— Christian Albrechtsen,
Moises Cure and
Tegan Hartman all won two matches to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team in their first matches of the spring season on Friday here at the Paseo Racquet Center.
Albrechtsen was victorious in both his singles and doubles affair against the NAIA's Ottawa University of Arizona Spirit, who defeated the Mavericks, 6-1. Hartman then won both of his matches in a 4-3 loss to NCAA Division II rival Western New Mexico University later in the day.
Cure teamed with Albrechtsen for a doubles victory against the Spirit before winning his No. 3 singles match against the Mustangs later in the day.
Against OUAZ, Albrechtsen and Cure claimed a fine 6-4 No. 1 doubles win over Michael Loyd and Austin Todd although the Sprit gained the early lead with 6-3 wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
They then won the first two completed singles matches to go up 3-0 before Albrechtsen got the Mavs on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Goor Adiv at No. 4 singles. However, the Spirit won each of the top three singles matches to improve to 2-0.
The Mavericks (2-2) again played from behind against WNMU (2-1) as the Mustangs won at No. 1 and 2 doubles although
Jandre van Wyk and Hartman were able to win the No. 3 doubles match in a tie-breaker (7-3).
The teams went on to split the singles matches evenly. The Mavericks received wins from
Jorge Abreu, Cure and Hartman.
Abreu won his No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3 while Cure was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Yu-Jhe Du. Hartman won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Rodrigo Mere.
The Mustangs had a 3-1 overall lead before Abreu and Cure evened the score.
However, Brendan Lock won the decisive No. 5 singles match in three sets over van Wyk, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
The Mavericks will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday morning encounter against Arizona Christian University in Phoenix. The Firestorm are 3-2 after blanking WNMU, 7-0 on Thursday.
