AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa baseball team continued their hot streak to open the season as they swept a doubleheader from the No. 22 Azusa Pacific Cougars on Friday (Feb. 11) afternoon in non-conference action.
Colorado Mesa scored 20 runs for the second straight game to open the season as they defeated the Cougars 20-10.
After taking an early 3-0 lead, the Mavericks fell behind 5-3 after just two innings of play. They evened the game after six innings of play before opening a big lead in the sixth 12-6 then stretched it out even more in the ninth as they put up seven runs in the final frame.
Harrison Rodgers has continued his torrid pace as he finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs and seven runs driven in. The two home runs give him five and moved his RBI total to 13 through two games.

Haydn McGeary, and
Chase Hamilton all had home runs on the game.
Newcomer
Julian Boyd went 3-for-3 coming off the bench for Colorado Mesa. He had two runs scored and four runs driven in with a stolen base as he came on as a pinch runner.
Senior
Austin Lorenz earned his first win of the season as he came in relief for starter
Joey Mazzetti. Lorenz pitched three and two-thirds innings and allowed one run on four hits with one strikeout while facing 14 total batters.
Game one today also saw the return of
Frankie Fitzgerald who was dominant. Fitzgerald pitched two perfect innings recording five strikeouts.
In the night cap, the Mavericks and Cougars locked horns in a pitching dual but Colorado Mesa came away with another win in a 7-1 game that guarantees a series win.
Kannon Handy earned the win on the mound for the Mavericks as he allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out five in six innings of work. Handy retired the first six batters of the game in order before issuing a walk to open the third inning of play.
Conrad Villafuerte and
Chase Hamilton each had two hits in the game as
Caleb Farmer hit a solo home run to pace the Mavericks offense.
The two teams will close out their four-game series on Saturday at 1pm.
