Mavericks make it 17 straight against Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team made it 17 straight wins over the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls on Saturday (Dec. 31) afternoon as they picked up their third win of the season with a 68-63 win in the Wilson Sports Complex.
 
The Mavericks led nearly wire-to-wire as they trailed by just three in the first quarter and took the lead for good at 14-12 with 2:16 to play in the first quarter and never looked back. The Cowgirls evened the score at 52-52 with 7:35 to play in the game. But the Mavericks outscored Highlands 16-11 from that point forward including a 9-2 run from that point to the 2:28 mark after a made three-point field goal from Monica Brooks to make it 61-54.
 
Colorado Mesa finished with four players in double figures for the second time this season with both outcomes resulting in Maverick victories. Brooks finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, a night after being held without a made field goal. She added seven rebounds and three assists while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.
 
Colorado Mesa made nine three-point field goals in the game including four makes in the first quarter that led to a 22-14 after one.
 
Sophomore Tia Slade finished her best weekend as a Maverick as she had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. She made a career-high four three-pointers in the game.
 
Freshman Olivia Reed completed her sixth double double of the season as she had 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the game. She helped the Mavericks a +10 (38-28) advantage in rebounds during the contest.
 
Kylie Kravig was the fourth Mavericks in double-digits as she had 12 points and a team-leading five assists.
 
The Mavericks will return home next week for a pair of RMAC contests. On Friday, they will take on Chadron State before a showdown with Colorado Christian on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena.
