GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Blaise Threatt led the way with 16 points and timely three-point shooting allowed Colorado Mesa to extend its win streak to four games and edge out CSU Pueblo 67-60 at Massari Arena.
Reece Johnson and
Mac Riniker had 10 points apiece to join Threatt in double figures. After dropping their first two conference games at home back on December 2-3, the Mavs are 4-2 in the RMAC and 9-3 overall.
Isaac Jessup hit back-to-back three-pointers to start the game and spot CMU a 6-3 lead. The Mavericks never trailed but were unable to put much distance between themselves and the Thunderwolves, as a Threatt three-pointer with 2:40 to go gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the half at 29-21. The Mavs led by three at halftime, taking a 31-28 advantage into the break.
CSU Pueblo took the lead early in the second half, using a 5-0 run to take a 43-40 lead with 12:49 to play, but Threatt immediately answered with a three to tie the game. When Pueblo built what would be its largest lead of the game at 49-45,
Reece Johnson and
Ty Allred hit threes on back-to-back possessions to transform a four-point deficit into a two-point lead.
The Mavs continued to keep their shooting stroke intact, as
Michael McCurry hit a three and a layup before a three from
Trevor Baskin completed an 8-0 run that made it 61-52 heading into the under-four media timeout.
Threatt finished with 16 points on 5 of 11 shooting with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. The Mavericks had 12 steals in the game, including four from
Mac Riniker and three from
Trevor Baskin, while the Thunderwolves only picked off CMU five times.
Colorado Mesa will be in Las Vegas, New Mexico tomorrow night to face New Mexico Highlands, who are coached by former CMU All-American Mike Dominguez. The Cowboys entered the week 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the RMAC. NMSU and the Mavs will tip off at 4 p.m. Saturday.
