Mavs battle hard but come up short

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team fell behind early and battled back but, in the end, came up just short in a 72-64 loss to the Regis Rangers on Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon at Regis Fieldhouse in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Mavericks came out and trailed by as many as 12 points with four minutes to play in the first quarter. They trailed 36-30 at the break where they shot 37 percent despite going 0-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Colorado Mesa came out in the second half and started to take control and even led going into the fourth quarter 53-52 after Monica Brooks drilled a three-pointer with 46 to play in the quarter. They outscored the Rangers 23-16 in the quarter and shot nearly 59 percent from the field. They attempted just three three-point field goals in the quarter and made two of them.

They could maintain the consistent pressure on the Rangers in the fourth quarter as they turned the ball over seven times in the frame that led to eight Ranger points. Regis went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter that ended with 3:13 to play in the quarter.

The Mavericks answered with an 8-0 run but could get any closer.
