Mavericks head into winter break in the win column

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team will enjoy their winter break a little more after securing a 68-64 win over Adams State on Saturday (Dec. 17) afternoon in Brownson Arena.

The win gives the Mavericks their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the year and extends their winning streak over the Grizzlies to 22 games a span of exactly 11 years. The streak started on December 17, 2011 and continues after a win on December 17, 2022.

The Mavericks took a 29-26 lead into halftime nearly coughed it completely up after the third quarter as the Grizzlies outscored them 24-16 in the frame to take a 50-45 lead into the fourth quarter.

Colorado Mesa outscored Adams State 23-14 in the fourth quarter and erased the five-point deficit.

The Mavericks won the game at the free-throw line as they were 16-for-23 from the line while the Grizzlies were just 7-of-15 from the line. Monica Brooks had a huge night but especially at the free-throw line where she was 8-for-9.

The senior tied for the game-high with 19 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and included 1-for-3 from the three-point line. The 19 points set a season-high and tied a career-high that she had last season against Fort Lewis.

She added eight rebounds and handed out four assists in the win.

The Mavericks shot over 40 percent from the field including a mark north of 36 percent from three. Despite turning the ball over 22 times that led to 23 Grizzly points, they still came away with the win. The Grizzlies had 12 fastbreak points which can be contributed to the high paced full court press they implored.

Olivia Reed got back in the double double column with 14 points and tied a career-high with 15 rebounds while Tia Slade finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Newcomer Megan Pohs, playing in her first game as a Maverick, played nearly 22 minutes and had four points and two rebounds.

The Mavericks will return to action after the break on December 30 and 31 as they take on New Mexico
