DSAN FRANCISCO— Dawson Collins,
Collin Metzgar and
Alex Holguin all went 2-0 during the day as the Colorado Mesa University wrestling team claimed a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual win over the host San Francisco State University Gators during a Saturday morning split here in The Swamp.
The Mavericks, wrestling duals for the first time this young season, had dropped an earlier 22-18 neutral-mat decision to Menlo College in a back-and-forth non-conference inter-organizational dual.
Holguin won both of his matches by fall, pinning Menlo's Maximus Zamora in two minutes and 50 seconds before defeating SFSU Gator Gage Mettler at the 5:28 mark of his 174-pound match during the later RMAC dual.
Collins was also a 9-4 winner over Menlo's Riley Siason at 125 pounds and received a forfeit win against SFSU.
Meanwhile, Metzgar was 7-4 winner over Menlo's Jovan Garcia and a 12-2 major decision victor over the Gators' Tony Margiotta as the Mavs got out to quick starts in both duals.
Against Menlo, the Mavericks led 6-0 thanks to Collins and Metzgar's victories before the NAIA's 11
th-ranked Oaks, who had seven nationally-ranked individuals in their lineup, answered back with victories at 141 and 149 pounds, the latter of which was by pin just with just four seconds left in the bout, to go ahead 9-6.
The Oaks then went up 13-6 with a major decision win at 157 pounds by seventh-ranked Abraham Del Toro before the Mavericks stormed back to take an 18-13 lead with pins by
Dylan Ranieri and Holguin in the 165 and 174-pound matches. Ranieri took out NAIA No. 8 Rysan Leong in 1:27.
However, the Oaks went on to win the final three matches of the dual, squeaking out 10-8 and 5-3 decisions at 184 and 197 pounds before Antonio DaCosta, ranked 20
th nationally, won a 6-1 decision at 285 pounds to clinch their victory.
The Mavs would bounce back quickly against SFSU, taking a 13-0 lead as
Andrew Silva claimed a 5-4 decision over Sean Yamaski at 141 pounds after Collins and Metzgar's victories had set the table.
The Gators did get on the board with a 6-1 decision from Joshua Fuentes Norikiyo at 149 pounds before
Daniel Magana re-established a 13-point team margin (16-3) with a 4-1 decision over Kyle Botelho at 157 pounds.
Strait then fell 9-6 to Boltyn Taam at 165 pounds before Holguin's second pin gave the Mavericks a wide 22-6 lead. The Mavs then clinched the dual with a forfeit win for
Jason Bynarowicz at 184 pounds before the Gators won the final two dual matches by decision.
Denim Torgerson, Tanner Doyle and Bynarowicz also claimed exhibition match wins during the day for CMU.
The Mavericks, who have now won eight consecutive RMAC duals, will be back in tournament action next Saturday competing at the Younes Hospitality UNK Open in Kearney, Nebraska.
