GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Three players scored their first goals of the season as the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team completed an undefeated week with a decisive 3-0 win over local rivals Western Colorado.
Tatum Pfalmer,
Talea Kuennen and
Kylie Wells found the net for CMU. Pfalmer scored twice in 2021, but it was the first goal in the collegiate careers of freshmen Kuennen and Wells.
The Mavericks, who rank seventh in Division II in shots per game, peppered the Mountaineers net with 18 shot attempts, 11 of which were on goal, making it the seventh time in 13 games that the Mavericks have put double-digit attempts on target.
All the offensive pressure meant a relaxing day for goalkeeper
Chloe Dody. After Dody saved WCU forward Natasha Kasozi's effort five minutes into the match, the redshirt sophomore didn't need to make another one before giving way to
Savannah Harvey, who stood in the net for the final 18 minutes to complete the combined shutout.
The Mavericks got on the board when
Haley Klasner hit the crossbar with a long-range attempt, but Pfalmer was the fastest to react to the rebound and took advantage of a scrambling goalkeeper to put the Mavs ahead just two seconds past the 25-minute mark of the match.
Kuennen, a true freshman from Littleton, Colo., doubled CMU's advantage with a fantastic strike in the 42
nd minute. After chasing down a ball near the right-hand corner flag, Kuennen put the ball through the legs of a defender, ran around her and curled a left-footed shot perfectly into the top left corner.
Kylie Wells, a Grand Junction native and Fruita Monument High School graduate, capped the scoring in the 56
th minute but a pair of her teammates did a lot of the legwork.
Sophia Beames won the ball back off a WCU defender in the Mountaineers' defensive zone and was able to drop it back to redshirt senior defender
Jacqueline Linn, who spotted Wells making the run on the far side and struck an inch-perfect cross that caught the Mountaineers completely off guard. Wells lunged and got enough of a toe on the ball to direct it into the corner to make it 3-0.
A more well-known Fruita Monument grad, newly minted CMU career goalscoring leader
Lila Dere, did not score thanks mostly to Western Colorado goalie Aubree Orozco. Dere fired six shots, four of which were on target to comprise half of the eight saves made by Orozco in the match.
With the win, the Mavericks are 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in RMAC play. They are currently in sixth place in the conference standings with 12 points, just three points away from third. The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the RMAC tournament, with the top four teams hosting at least one game.
