GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Lila Dere snapped a long-by-her-standards goalscoring drought with a pair of first-half strikes and
Haley Klasner tallied three assists in a 4-0 victory over Colorado Christian for Colorado Mesa women's soccer.
Efficiency was the name of the game for the Mavs, who took the same number of shots (eight) as their opponents but placed six on target and four in the net.
Chloe Dody made two saves in goal for CMU while
Savannah Harvey made one over the final 20 minutes to notch a combined shutout.
The Mavericks continue to slowly climb the RMAC standings, now sitting at 5-3 in conference play and 7-6-1 overall. They have won their past three matches in a row.
This match was a far cry from the last time these two schools met, when
Lila Dere set a program record with 16 total shots. The Cougars managed to hold CMU to its lowest shot total of the season with eight while Dere, the national leader, only managed three.
But Dere, also the national leader with 17 goals, proved her finishing ability to get the Mavs off and running early on. The redshirt sophomore forward scored in both the third and 22
nd minutes of the goal, receiving a pass from
Haley Klasner on each occasion. The early goals were a welcome sight for Dere, who had been held without a point in three of the previous four matches.
Mikayla Eccher added a third for CMU in the 37
th minute, with freshman midfielder
Peyton Bundy picking up her second assist of the year. Klasner recorded her eighth of the year and third of the game early in the second half, with
Addie Randel completing the scoring with her fourth goal of the year.
The match was primarily running out the clock after that, as the Mavs only recorded one shot after their fourth goal.
Savannah Harvey came on for the final 20 minutes of the match in goal and made her first save in her three relief appearances so far on the season.
Other key contributors like midfielder
Mira Houck, midfielder
Sophia Beames and defender
Stella Bohlender played a season-low in minutes. Center back
Kaydree Rapp played 81 minutes, the first time she has played less than the full 90 all season long.
Up next, CMU will face MSU Denver on the road Sunday at noon. The Roadrunners will enter the match tied with CMU for fifth place in the RMAC at 15 points each. MSU Denver has a 4-1-3 record in the conference with an 8-2-4 mark overall.
