GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Metro State put together an airtight defensive performance and snuck one shot past
Chloe Dody to come away with a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa in a women's soccer clash on Sunday.
The Mavericks were held to a season-low five shots and only required MSU Denver goalkeeper Kayla Caballero to make two saves. Dody made four but Jaimy Sawaged scored her sixth goal of the season in the 59
th minute to make the difference.
With the loss, Colorado Mesa is 7-7-1 overall and 5-4 in the RMAC with three matches left to play. The defeat broke a three-game winning streak.
Haley Klasner and
Addie Randel had shots on goal for the Mavs.
Lila Dere, the national leader in shots and shots on goal per game, was held without a single shot attempt for the first time in her 43-game career despite playing all 90 minutes.
While the performance was out of character for CMU, it was par for the course for MSU Denver, which has allowed an RMAC-low nine goals all season. The Roadrunners rank third in the RMAC with an .804 save percentage but are barely tested, only having to make 2.5 saves per match.
Each of the Mavs' final three matches are at home, starting with Adams State on Friday at 4 p.m. and New Mexico Highlands on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Both matches will be a part of doubleheaders with the men's team playing home matches on both days as well. The 2022 regular season will conclude with a midweek clash against Westminster on Wednesday, Sept. 26 from Grand Junction.
