GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Lila Dere continued to score at will,
Sophia Beames had a three-point night and the Mavericks' defense held Adams State without a shot on goal until the waning moments of the match as CMU women's soccer started their run of three consecutive season-ending home games with a 4-0 win.
Dere scored twice to raise her season total to 19 goals. In the process, Dere reached 88 career points, passing Tiffany Thompson's 85 for the most in a career in CMU history (one goal = two points, one assist = one point). Dere now has 41 career goals and six career assists.
Friday's win was a total team effort, however. The Mavs outshot ASU by a 20-4 margin and put a staggering 14 shots on target. Adams State goalkeeper Ashlyn Bartley made 10 saves in a valiant effort, but the Mavs offense overwhelmed the visitors, scoring twice in each half.
Dere got the Mavs on the board in the 29
th minute by getting on the end of a perfectly whipped cross from
Sophia Beames on the left-hand side. Dere's right-footed boot was straight into the top left corner from point-blank range, leaving Bartley no chance.
That was Beames' third assist of the year, and just 90 seconds later, the redshirt sophomore midfielder tallied her first goal of the season. Receiving a pass from
Peyton Bundy, Beames cut inside onto her right foot and hit a laser into the corner just shy of the 30-minute mark of the match.
The Mavericks got right back on the offensive front foot in the second half. In the 50
th minute, right back
Jacqueline Linn made a run down the right side but cut it back to find
Addie Randel, who took a touch and buried it at the far post for her fifth goal of the season. Randel becomes the third Maverick to reach the five-goal plateau this year after Dere and fellow forward
Evelyn Hammer.
Dere made it 4-0 in the 56
th minute after being taken down in the box and drawing a penalty kick. Dere stepped up to the spot herself and sent Bartley the wrong way for her second of the game.
Both teams emptied the benches, especially CMU, which let a total of 26 players see the field. Starting goalkeeper
Chloe Dody played the opening 62 minutes and did not face a shot on goal before being relieved by freshman
Ella Harrison, who got her first game action since the second game of the season against Saint Martin's. Harrison made two saves in the final 28 minutes. Nine different Mavs registered a shot on goal, led by Dere with five.
The Mavericks are 6-4 in the RMAC and 8-7-1 overall. They face New Mexico Highlands on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The time of that match was recently changed due to RMAC protocols involving the final day of the men's regular season. The women's game will kick off immediately after the CMU men's match, which now starts at 11 a.m.
