Wachtel, Klasner Score In 2-0 Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – With one goal in each half, Colorado Mesa women's soccer snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 home victory over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.

Haley Klasner set up Ally Wachtel for her first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute, then scored herself in the 49th minute to double the Mavs' advantage. Klasner now has two goals and five assists on the year.

The Mavericks outshot Fort Lewis 22-8 and had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Chloe Dody made four saves, but all but one were on extremely long-range attempts that were comfortable catches for the CMU goalkeeper.

The opening stages of the game were played entirely with CMU on the attack. The Mavericks put three shots over the crossbar in the first 12 minutes of the match. Lila Dere forced Skyhawks goalkeeper Katlyn Rosenbaum to make her first save in the 14th minute before Rosenbaum sprinted and sprawled to deflect Kylie Wells' effort on a 50-50 loose ball seven minutes later.

Colorado Mesa finally broke through off a corner kick. Klasner whipped in a cross from the right side which took a deflection off a leaping Fort Lewis defender and settled at the feet of Wachtel, who calmly finished at the near post in the bottom left corner for the freshman defender's first goal of the season.

The Mavericks held Fort Lewis without a shot on goal in the first half and outshot them 7-2 overall in the opening 45 minutes. It only took CMU three and a half minutes in the second half to double their lead, when Klasner played a give-and-go with Kylie Wells and curled a shot from about 20 yards out. Rosenbaum's vision of the shot was obstructed, but the ball scooted through traffic untouched and into the corner.

Although they wouldn't find the net for the rest of the match, they continued to threaten, putting up 15 shots in the second half. Elizabeth David had three of Fort Lewis' four shots on goal in the second half, all from free kick attempts of 30 yards or more.

The Mavericks briefly played short after Michaela Dangler received a red card in the 85th minute, but the outcome was never in doubt.

With the win, the Mavericks are now 5-6-1 overall and an even 3-3 in RMAC play. They will travel to nearby Western Colorado to face the Mountaineers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
