The Mavericks hosted long time division foe Colorado School of Mines on Sunday Oct. 2nd at the CMU Rugby Pitch. Colorado Mesa fell 66-29.
The match started off with an early Mines score, but as has become custom, CMU answered back minutes later with a Try of their own by co-captain
Nallely Robles-Velazquez. Around 15 minutes in, the Mavericks took their first and only lead of the match as they went ahead 12-5 with a try by inside center
Reese Barber and a conversion by Robles-Velazquez.
Mines would go on a four Try spree as little mistakes were capitalized on by a veteran Mines team. Errors in placement, ball control, and tackling turned out to be crucial to CMU's downfall in the first half. They dug themselves a 40-12 hole going into halftime. There looked to be a bright spot on the horizon as the Mavs came out of the half reinvigorated scoring two quick Trys with Amery Chavez and
Zelly Moore showing their speed on the outside. Closing the gap to 22-45. Mines continued to find the gaps in defense and tacked on a few more. Moore would get the last word, as she finished the match scoring for CMU.
CMU gets a two-week breather to recover and hopefully get some injured starters back in the lineup as they prepare to host Colorado State University Sun. Oct. 23 at 11am.
