Takanaka Scores Two In 6-0 Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's soccer broke through with a dominant performance that the team has been craving for some time, soundly defeating South Dakota Mines 6-0 on Friday from Rapid City, S.D.

Led by Daisuke Takanaka with two goals and Ethan Anderson with a goal and an assist, eight different Mavericks recorded a point in the victory. Diego Chavez made two saves for his second straight and third overall shutout.

The Mavericks didn't take it easy on the 1-12-1 Hardrockers, taking 25 shots while only allowing five. Ethan Anderson put the Mavs on the board in the eighth minute, receiving a pass from Joey Joiner and finishing into the lower left corner. It was the first goal of the season for Anderson, who has only appeared in half of CMU's matches so far due to injury. Six minutes later, Takanaka doubled the lead with his first goal with assists from Anderson and Shafer.

Colorado Mesa really poured it on in the second half, outshooting the Hardrockers 19-3 in the final 45 minutes. Takanaka scored his second in the 49th minute with Leo Mireles assisting, quickly followed by unassisted strikes from midfielder Matheus Lazzuri and defender Isa Trujillo.

Alec Fronapfel completed the rout with an 87th minute goal. It was the first goal or point of the year for Fronapfel, who led the team with nine goals and 19 points in 2021. The goal snapped a 14-game scoreless streak for the redshirt junior forward.

The Mavericks put on a clinic in all phases of the game, as CMU went the entire 90 minutes without being whistled for a single foul or offsides.
Redshirt freshman goalie Diego Chavez was barely challenged in his third start of the season, making stops in the 25th and 73rd minutes. South Dakota Mines goalkeeper Daniel Freitas, the RMAC's leader in total saves, made seven more to make sure the score wasn't even more lopsided.

The Mavericks are now 8-5-1 overall and an even 3-3-1 in RMAC play. They will continue their road trip against Regis on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Rangers are 1-3-2 in the RMAC ahead of Friday night's game against Westminster.
